Exploration of the Punggu Alas area of Sebangau National Park makes you even more amazed at how vast this National Park is, with its peat swamp rainforest, and its biodiversity. Punggu Alas takes you to a deeper area observing the fauna in the National Park such as the sound of gibbons singing. They are said to produce the most complex singing of all land mammals. Usually, you hear their song in the morning. Their beautiful songs range from 10 to 30 minutes. When a couple is married, they perform a duet as a way of declaring and strengthening their bond. Other gibbon songs mark territorial boundaries or reveal the gender of the singer or individual identity. When you approach an orangutan in the wild, your heart always beats fast. This large, gentle red ape is one of our closest relatives. In fact, we share 98% of the same DNA. They are very intelligent and have sophisticated reasoning abilities. Like human babies, baby orangutans can cry and whine, and the sweetest sight is seeing them look soft, almost smiling, at their mothers. Also, the smell of forest and water emitted by the Sebangau peat swamps. Some describe it as the aroma of tea. Indeed, the water is dyed a dark brown color by the tannins released from fallen leaves and peat – hence the name ‘black water swamp’. Overall, 927 species of flowering plants and ferns have been identified in the peat swamp forests of Kalimantan, and the smell is very fragrant and trusted by the Dayak people, if you drink peat water in Punggu Alas, it can be healthy and traditional medicine. In addition7, the Dayak people are well known as cooks using extraordinary native spices.
