According to the Sabangau National Park management, it refers to the minister Forestry’s decision Number: 529 / Menhut II. / 2012 dates 25th September 2012 broadly ± 542.141 Hectare. it is located at three different places, such as Katingan Regency, Pulang Pisau Regency and Palangka Raya City, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Sabangau National Park has some important values. The first, it has a lot of high variety of flora and fauna species, included 166 flora species among those species that are protected as Ramin, 116 bird species as Bangau Tong-tong (storks species), 35 mammals and 36 species of fish which are protected, and also Orangutan‘s habitats, Proboscis Mongkey of Kalimantan called Bekantan, Macan Dahan (tigers species), Owa, etc. The second, Sabangau National Park is one of the Peatland swamp forest left at Central Kalimantan Province. It is the area that becomes the society support because it gives a lot of economic values – ecology that really necessary for the life quality of society. The last, It is the Icon of nature tourism at Central Kalimantan, region pride and the buffer of life system for the society of Central kalimantan.
This Sabangau National park is efficiently managed by Balai UPT of national park that has the main task to do the implementation of natural resources conservation management and its ecosystem and national park area management based on the regulation of prevail legislation.
The Sabangau National Park Management includes area restoration (canals blocking), rehabilitation, forest fire control, society empowerment, nature tourism, enhancement of the species population which is threatened destroyed, research and also protection. In the implementation of area restoration, this is important because there is vegetation growth developing around the canal, with severally psychological feature which is the constricting of canal channel dimension and the growing of some species of vegetation around canal. The function of canal blocking is to keep the earth humidity around its so it gives an condition where vegetation can grow and also prevents of fire-risk.
The office of Sabangau Natural Park management and WWF Indonesia of central Kalimantan have built about 1.122 retaining dams since 2006 to 2014. Meanwhile, planting activities have about 9.418 hectare which are planted until the year 2014 that spread at the whole of National Park area. This is to apply the restoration and rehabilitation in the area of the Natural Park.
However, The managament of this national park has some challenges such as: the implementation to set the definitive bounds at the whole are is not complete yet; happening the forest fire frequently; and also the management and nature tourism effort are not optimal.
