First of all, huge thank you to Bu Febri for her willingness to be interviewed regarding this topic.

Eco-Friendly straws, from bamboo to aluminum, those materials are probably the most common materials to make eco-friendly straws. But, have you heard of Purun? Endemic to Tumbang Nusa, Purun is a plant that can be commonly found in Tumbang Nusa. The plant then transformed into Purun straws, an eco-friendly alternative created to reduce plastic waste. Purun straws, made from natural, biodegradable materials, these straws break down and can enhance soil fertility when discarded directly onto the soil, making the environment healthier.  Purun straws are intended for one-time use only, they must be stored in a cool, dry place, as they can expire after six months after its production and may develop mold when stored in damp places.

Tumbang Nusa is one of the places where they produce these straws. Although Tumbang Nusa is not the only place where Purun straws are produced, but why choose Tumbang Nusa over other places? Because the production of Purun straws supports the livelihoods of the people in Tumbang Nusa, where there is not a lot of work choice. Not only that, it also exposes Tumbang Nusa to the world. This production initiative began in 2020, providing an alternative to plastics straws while fostering engagement between communities. These straws are made manually by the people of Tumbang Nusa without machinery, which shows the craftsmanship capabilities of the local people

.

One significant challenge has been finding the right person willing to learn the skills needed for straw production, as not everyone has the interest or ability to do it. Making 1000 straws takes approximately two to three days, allowing villagers to work during their free time while attending to other family responsibilities.

By choosing Purun straws, you contribute to the efforts of combating plastic pollution while supporting the people in Tumbang Nusa. Each straw used helps sustain this important work and promotes a healthier environment.
