Here’s my take on the day. On the first day of Guille and Vero’s visit, I was waiting at Kereng Pakahi Pier. Kak Yun, the CEO of CBG, and her husband Kak Ferry, who drove them from Palangkaraya City, joined me shortly after. We then set off by boat to Karuing Village for a warm welcoming ceremony called Tampung Tawar hosted by the local community. After that, we enjoyed coffee, courtesy of Raya, the owner of Indu Kuh. We had a great time discussing various environmental topics. The day wrapped up with lunch at Gazebo before we began our journey into the heart of the peatland rainforest of Kalimantan, heading towards Punggu Alas.
Upon our arrival in Punggu Alas, we efficiently settled our luggage and enjoyed a delightful dinner. Soon after, we embarked on an evening boat cruise along the serene Punggu Alas river. This excursion offered us the chance to observe the region’s unique flora and fauna while appreciating the tranquil and contemplative atmosphere of the forest. Despite our weariness, the experience was deeply rewarding, fostering a meaningful connection with the natural surroundings. We navigated the river for about an hour before retiring for the night, allowing ourselves to rest and rejuvenate for the following day’s endeavors.
As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, the ethereal calls of gibbons gently roused us from our sleep. We began our day with a substantial breakfast before setting off on our trek into the deep, verdant peatlands of Punggu Alas in Sebangau National Park. Equipped for a full day of exploration, we brought along provisions for lunch, coffee, and hammocks for a refreshing nap amidst the tranquility of the forest. The air was filled with the distant, resonant calls of orangutans, which we heard several times throughout our journey. Unfortunately, the dry season and lack of fruit meant that sightings were elusive. As the day progressed and the sun began to set, we made our way back to camp. A word to the wise: trekking 200 meters through the dense peatland can feel like traversing a kilometer, especially for those not used to such challenging terrain. So, ensure you’re well-prepared for the adventure!
As the night unfolded and the full moon illuminated the sky, we set out on a peaceful boat ride down the river after dinner. During our journey, two fish unexpectedly leaped into our boat. The river was unusually abundant with fish that night, a rare phenomenon according to the locals, who suggested it might be an auspicious sign for our expedition. Along with the prolific fish, we encountered various forms of wildlife, including small pythons and other serpents. The evening was filled with wonder and excitement. After our enchanting river adventure, we returned to camp to rest and recharge, preparing ourselves for the activities planned for the following day.
As morning light filtered through, we meticulously prepared for our departure from Punggu Alas, our final day in this enchanting locale. We retraced our steps back to Keruing Village, where we took up residence in a charming local homestay. The warmth and genuine hospitality of our hosts made us feel instantly at ease.
Lunch at the homestay was a delightful affair, after which we returned to savor coffee brewed by Raya. This was also a perfect moment for Vero and Guille to engage in intimate conversations with local residents, capturing the essence of their experiences.
The afternoon brought us the pleasure of tasting Kalulut honey, courtesy of Pak Jeki. Its unique flavor was a testament to the rich natural resources of the region. We then embarked on a serene boat ride along the river, where we were treated to sightings of Proboscis monkeys and Hornbills in their natural habitat.
On our return to the village, we made a brief detour to a sandy riverbank, revealed by the receding waters of the dry season. The setting sun cast a golden hue over the Katingan River, and we lingered in the tranquil beauty of the sand field, savoring the day’s final moments.
That evening at the homestay, we were immersed in the rich tapestry of local culture. The night came alive with the enchanting sounds of Karungut, a traditional form of singing, accompanied by the delicate strumming of the Kecapi, a traditional guitar. We were also drawn into the rhythmic and spirited movements of the Manasai dance, a traditional Dayak Ngaju ritual that allowed us to fully engage with the local heritage.
As we savored the performances, we enjoyed warm conversations with the local residents, who treated us to freshly brewed coffee and boiled corn prepared with care by our hosts. The evening was a delightful blend of cultural immersion and heartfelt hospitality, reflecting the genuine warmth of the Keruing Village community.
The lively atmosphere and the friendly exchanges left us with a deep sense of connection and joy. With our spirits lifted and hearts warmed by the evening’s experiences, we retired for the night, grateful for the rich cultural tapestry we had woven into our journey.
As the morning light gently filtered through the homestay in Keruing Village, we gathered for a final breakfast, a last taste of the warmth and hospitality provided by our generous hosts. Each bite was a reminder of the kindness and care that had accompanied us throughout our stay.
With heartfelt farewells, we expressed our gratitude to our hosts and bid a fond goodbye to the charming village that had embraced us so warmly. The atmosphere was tinged with a mix of nostalgia and appreciation as we prepared to continue our journey.
Our route then took us back to Kereng Pakahi, where we paused to reflect on the remarkable experiences and treasured memories we had gathered. From there, Vero, Guille, and Kak Yun made their way to Palangkaraya, marking the conclusion of our memorable adventure. As we departed, the echoes of the village’s hospitality and the bonds we had formed stayed with us, bringing a poignant end to this extraordinary chapter of our travels.
